Who Killed the Electric Car has certainly lit up a few neurons in the outrage areas of my brain. In fact, this Electrical Vehicle (EV) neuron storm has extended beyond my outrage
processors, and gone on to ignite nearby areas of disgust, despair, and heck, I’ll admit
that there was some action in the more sociopathic regions of my psyche, as I flirted with
ideas of targeted terrorism against automobile manufacturers. But I’m getting ahead of
myself here.

The scenerio has the depressingly familiar hallmarks of the typical american conspiracy story. California car manufacturers (GM) reluctantly put an electric car on the
market under pressure to comply with California’s new air standards. Enter the EV1 — an
efficient, sexy, vehicle that is easy to use, a pleasure to drive, and has the added benefit
of extremely low environmental impact. Consumers respond favourably, in spite of the
manufacturers’ best efforts to sabotage the vehicle’s success through anti-marketing,
highlighting the vehicle’s shortcomings, and deliberate use of inferior battery technology
to limit its appeal.

Why on earth would GM go to such lengths to sabotage it’s own product? Why on earth has the entire industry not galloped off together in pursuit of this new technology — one that has not only enormous environmental benefits, but the potential to release us from dependence on foreign oil?

The answer, of course, as always, is MONEY and POWER.

1. Because GM’s primary product (gas guzzling behemoths) suffered through the juxtaposition with the stylish, sleek electric vehicle. Car manufacturers cannot promote a new green product without admitting to how filthy, inefficient, and environmentally disastrous their regular vehicles are. To promote/offer an electric vehicle is to give consumers the ability to NOT choose your primary product.

2. Because electrically fueled cars threaten the global fuel monopoly. If consumers all switch to electric cars, how will the big fuel companies continue to make their money? If people can just plug their cars in at home, who needs all of those filling stations?

Sigh.

Of course.

But what about other alternative energy sources, you may ask. What about hydrogen fuel
cells, and where do they fit into the picture. After all, hydrogen fuel cell powered
vehicles are the real next big thing right? (You can be sure of this because the Governor
Terminator drives one). Well, hydrogen fuel cell technology is where the fuel companies
come in to stabilize their postion as sole providers for the worlds’ energy needs — promoting hydrogen fuel technology is their attempt to maintain their monopoly on
the fuel supply, having already consumed and destroyed the fledgling battery technology.
Unlike electrical outlets, not everyone has home hydrogen storage. Ergo, hydrogen
technology perpetuates consumer reliance on these fuel giants to provide fuel and filling
stations, as well as encouraging people’s belief that a humvee is the ‘tooting around town’
vehicle of choice. It is absolutely galling to see the comparison between GM’s hummer and
the EV1. Polar opposites in really every way. And yet, I bet you can guess which one came with $100 000 (yes, you read that correctly) in tax credits, free with purchase?

Even while taking this movie with mountains of salt, it is very simple to see that this is
yet another example of the powers that be (car manufacturing giants, US government, oil
companies) manipulating the market, the information, the technology, and the people to keep themselves on top, while screwing the earth and every one of its citizens in the process.

Thanks GM! Thanks Mobil! Thanks Shell! You blood sucking, soulless, assholes.
Thanks Reagan! Thanks George Dubya! (see above).
Thanks consumers! Thanks for buying into the marketing shiite that dictates that the
ability to crush your neighbour with your SUV/humvee should be your prime buying
consideration. Thanks to everyone who contributed in big and small ways to ensure that this whole mess carries on for just a few more decades.

AAAARRRGH!

Yeah, I’m a little wound up after seeing this film – in spite of it’s attempt to finish
optimistically. In the end the bright eyed red head poster girl asserts that a grass roots consumer movement will prevail, and eventually the forces of good will triumph over the evil villains.

Sadly, I can’t help but wonder if this is really the case. There won’t ever be a major change until the powers that be can find a way to reconcile an environmental and political agenda. Unless it’s possible for the industry giants and politicians to maintain control while being green, it will just imply never happen. And as much as we talk about these big corporations as if they can be classified as good or bad, in the end, corporations are only constructs — fictional entities existing as ideas or agendas which ultimately need people to function. So ultimately, it’s individual people who are to blame. We have all failed in this story — not just the people making the self serving toxic decisions at the top, but also the average person at the bottom who is putting up with it — complicit through their ignorance and apathy. I think the words “total abdication of responsibility” sum it all up nicely.

But where to from here? I find myself again in the position of being all outraged up with no place to go. In spite of the film’s insistance that optimism is warranted, I feel it fails to provide a direct opportunity for consumers to take action. (ie: write to this address, support this organisation, find out more here). While I’m sure this helps the film keep its hands clean(er) politically, I consider it a major rhetorical failure. To highlight an exigence without giving options for resolution is a major missed opportunity. Especially when your target audience is accustomed to spoon feeding.

And in that spirit, I give you the following opportunities to learn more, to help you make up your own mind:

Sooo I can’t help but have noticed a visually pleasing but still kind of depressing trend in women’s clothing — the above named short jacket and straight leg jeans combo a la every single style program to hit the cablewaves since, I dunno, when did this “What Not to Wear” thing start? Granted, the new uniform is a heap easier on the eyes than most people are dragging out of their pre-makeover wardrobes, but it’s so eye-pleasingly boring in it’s endless variations, I think it might be somehow worse. I don’t know…I kind of like seeing the scary funny things people crawl out of the house in. And I respect their right to have impeccably bad taste. I guess at the end of it, it’s the homogeneity that depresses me. I just get bummed out when I see people mindlessly mirroring these fierce fashion trends. Kitsilano was rife with it. I could walk down the beach and see a hundred copies of the same airbrushed look. Do these girls look at each other and realise that they are wearing identical clothes on identical bodies and are swishing around identical haircuts? I mean it. I don’t think they do. I guess we all dress to show our affiliation with our ideas, whatever they may be. In this case “my ideas are exactly like everyone else’s”. What then of the anti=hero? The lone wolf who sees the world his own way, on his own terms, with his dyed blue hair, studs in his ears, nose, elbows, and throat. Well, I guess he’s screaming too. But it’s a different kind of scream.

In summary, the straight leg jeans + jacket thing — it’s gotta go. Thank you.

I used to have this game on our old Apple IIe that used to entertain me endlessly. It was a frighteningly dull game by today’s standards — no graphics whatsoever — just a cursor flashing on the text entry line:

Choose number of buses (0-99)? 99 (duh!)

Choose ramp angle (0-180 degrees) ummmm how about 45

Choose speed (0-100mph): okay, 100?

You were then invited to press the spacebar, which would compel our intrepid hero, Evel Kneivel, to race at whatever breakneck speed towards a ramp positioned just so, with a hope that he and his motorcycle would clear the 99 buses that you set up in his way.

Regardless of what combination of buses, speed, and ramp angle I chose, I would invariably crash and burn. So what exactly made this game so much fun? Why, the MEDICAL REPORT, of course! After every failed attempt, the program would calculate the extent of your injuries:

You have broken both arms, both legs, fractured your skull, cracked 5 ribs, and crushed your pelvis.

Would you like to try again?
For all of you out there who always answered a resounding YES!!, have I got some great news for you. Evel Knievel did not go the way of the Apple IIe. He still exists in collectible form, and is waiting to perform whatever cunning stunts you can contrive for him, in full 3 dimensional plastic glory.

Check it out: Evel Knievel

As a committed moral vegetarian, I think it’s excellent that there are animal rights campaigns out there designed to raise awareness about cruelty to animals, animal testing, and the treatment of animals used for food. They’ve even managed to make the issues ‘sexy’ with the famous “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” campaign, in which we’re treated to a full view of whatever celebrity du jour has been convinced that showing their naked skin is the best they can do for the animal rights movement:

“Okey dokey, I’ll just roll off my leather couch, zip over to the photoshoot in my vanity car with leather interior, set down my trendy little leather clutch (containing my leather wallet and mobile phone holster), slip off my leather FMBs, take off my bone jewelry, my leather belt…and make my stand against cruelty to animals.”

…Does anyone else see a problem here?

It’s incredible how many vegetarians out there are still wearing leather. I’ve heard some interesting comments on this issue recently – people advocating use of leather over synthetics as its biodegradable. This gave me pause for thought. While I don’t like the idea of wearing animal skins on my feet, I also don’t fancy the idea of my veggie friendly snazzy vinyl platforms or what have you outlasting me by 500 years – fashions come and go, but crappy pleather lasts an eternity. So what to do? I will admit that I am wearing leather shoes as I type this – a result of the fact that at the time they were required, I couldn’t find anything suitable for work that wasn’t made of dead animal, or otherwise vile to wear. I guess pleather used to be the poor person’s leather, but does being veggie mean a lifetime of smelly trenchfoot due to synthetic shoes? I’m not sure those hemp flipflops are exactly office friendly – nor are the canvas court shoes (probably made in a sweatshop)…. So what is a veggie to do?

My fella has been having a similar problem, so I know this issue isn’t restricted to the female of the species. He was a bit luckier – he actually managed to find a website that sold some veggie friendly trainers, which came with the added bonus of being specialist hackysack gear. Out of interest he contacted the company to find out where the shoes were made — a query that was met with a deafening silence – a dirty little secret perhaps?? Hmm?? Or maybe it was just that the customer support folks monitoring the website in Bangalore weren’t able to comment on the conditions in the Hanoi factory.

Indeed it is a slippery moral slope when you start factoring in human rights issues into the production of cheap non leather wearables, on top of the environmental issues.

Is it still bad for your karma if it’s second hand leather?

So these guys are up to something interesting. Having recently entered the world of nanotechnology and quantum physics, the sudden awareness of this verbotensphere does’t really surprise me — I’ve been primed for alternate universes.

How beautiful is this:

Most people probably have some trouble understanding the appeal of spending the night marching up and down a dark, wet cement tube — at least until they try it for themselves. I can’t say for sure, but I suspect draining offers many of the same mind-expanding benefits as being in a sensory depravation tank. There are many things to sense in a drain, of course, like the wonderful smell, the steady, echoed slap-splash of explorers marching through the water in unison, and the sight of uniform concrete tubes stretching towards infinity in either direction. At one point Persephone asked Sean if he thought the drain was getting smaller, and he replied that either the drain was getting smaller or we were getting bigger. In such an unnatural environment, there was really no way for us to determine which was true, as there was nothing “real” we could look at to restore our natural sense of proportion. With nothing real to correct my mental processes, it was a simple mental trick for me to imagine that gravity had shifted and that we were walking on the ceiling, or marching straight down the pipe towards the centre of the earth.

I am fascinated by the concept that all of the world’s problems are solvable.

At least in theory.

Isn’t it boggling to imagine what would happen if we all simultaneously just gave away what we didn’t need so no one person, city, or country went without? Theoretically, it is possible. What if all of those aid missions or what have you that are way too expensive to contemplate suddenly just happened? What if the money didn’t matter anymore, and we all just did what was right?

I dunno. The whole idea just blows me away. We have the solutions to poverty, poor health, lack of education, terrible infrastructure, environmental devastation… all of this technology exists somewhere in the world. What would happen if we all just shared? All it would require is a simple decision, when it comes down to it:

“Let’s just share, shall we? Let’s send things where they’re needed most, and forget the profit margins. Let’s get some road building crews over to Southeast Asia so it isn’t a death defying process to cross the country. Let’s send some food to some suffering people – we’re too damned fat here in the west anyway. While we’re at it, let’s cancel Third World debt too while we’re at it. That would be good. Then maybe some of these totally impoverished nations would have a hope in hell of rebuilding themselves from the ground up. How about some global health care? And how about helping each other gain access to healthy drinking water so huge chunks of the human population don’t suffer from life/energy-sapping parasites for their whole lives? And what if we all just stopped driving for a little while? Why don’t we just start producing those electric cars again? That would be good… And while we’re at it, why don’t we just stop eating meat all the time and use all of that useful land and clean water better, in ways that doesn’t cause pollution and suffering?…”

I just can’t get over the fact that all of this is totally possible. Highly unlikely – but it is still possible. Isn’t that a strange concept? Seriously just take a minute to ponder this idea. What if the money didn’t matter and we just suddenly and spontaneously decided to do the “right thing” as it were. Why are we choosing this kind of world? Doesn’t that seem strange? Do we even realize what we’re choosing?

I just don’t get it. But I do like the idea that this kind of thing is possible.
